Dicken's History Who had leadership qualities,a loving heart, and a hankering for education? Carrie Leila Dicken ![]() Carrie Dicken was born on March 19, 1865, one month before President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. She lived at 1109 Wells St. in Ann Arbor for many years. Carrie had a sister named Jessie Dicken and nephews named Dickinson Dicken and H. Donald Reed. Miss Dicken taught in Macomb County and Romeo from 1882 until 1893. She later attended University of Michigan, Michigan State Normal College, and Columbia University. She began teaching in Ann Arbor at Bach School in 1894. Miss Carrie Dicken had three jobs! Imagine having three jobs in one lifetime! She was a teacher at Bach School, a principal on State Street and later at Perry School. She helped many aliens (foreign people) to learn English. Wow! Was she cool or what! After decades of hard work, she retired in 1934. Miss Dicken didn't get too much money for all the work she did. Only three hundred and fifty dollars per year. Schools in Romeo and Macomb County didn't pay her much. Then that all stopped. She was assigned to Perry School and they paid her so much more -- $2,420 per year because she was a principal.
